Those seeking to become a member of the Catholic Church, by completing the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation), or who wish to complete their initiation into the Church through the reception of Eucharist or Confirmation must attend classes. Catechesis in the parish settings is required, candidates should be 18 years or older.
OCIA sessions usually begin in early fall and continue through Lent. The Sacraments are usually administered at the Easter Vigil. RCIA, a program for those wishing to enter the Catholic Church, or to complete their initiation with the reception of First Communion and Confirmation after Baptism, begins on September 20, 2023 and meets bi-monthly in the parish business office from 6pm-7:15pm. Contact: Maureen Simmons at the parish business office.
What is the ORDER OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR CHILDREN (RCIC)?
This form of the rite of Christian initiation is intended for children, not baptized as infants or who are baptized but have not received any formal catechesis, who have attained the use of reason (age 7 +), and are of catechetical age. Children seek Christian initiation either at the direction of their parents or guardians or, with parental permission, on their own initiative. Such children are capable of receiving and nurturing a personal faith and of recognizing an obligation in conscience. But they cannot yet be treated as adults because, at this stage of their lives, they are dependent on their parents or guardians and are still strongly influenced by their companions and their social surroundings.
What is the process and when are the classes?
Children beginning this process are placed into regular Sunday Religious Education classes with their peers, and usually attend after-school sessions during the week.
When will children receive the sacraments?
When students are ready and prepared will receive the sacraments at a weekend Mass or, if appropriate, at the Easter Vigil in March or April.
How do I enroll my child?
Enrollment for OCIC occurs simultaneously with the enrollment for Family Faith Formation classes, or by calling the FFF director.
Can more than one child from the same family be enrolled in OCIC?
Yes! In many cases when a family is joining the church together, there is more than one child involved. It is highly encouraged to enroll all children at the same time.
